About David

I am a Registered Social Worker with a Masters Degree in Social Work from Hunter College in Manhattan.

ADULTS

I currently see adults in Individual Therapy with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, relationships, education and career planning.

I typically work together with a person over the first few sessions to come up with a plan to tackle the agreed upon problem. Once a plan is in place, I help individuals find their way through a process mostly influenced by CBT, Schema Therapy and/or ACT (effective evidence-based therapies).

There are also some who prefer a non-structured approach and enjoy the process of support and feedback concerning daily life and relationships.

TEENAGERS

I've worked with kids on and off in various roles since I was 20 years old, and as a psychotherapist since 2007. For many years I worked in the Regional Hospital where I provided evidence-based psychotherapy to kids from ages 6-18 with diagnoses of OCD, Anxiety, ADHD and Depression.

Currently, my practice is older teens, 16 years of age and up, as well as adults. I am also available for consultations with parents regarding younger teenagers and children.

If you are struggling with concerns that are limiting your happiness and satisfaction with daily life, I hope that you will give me the opportunity to help you.

We will talk and work out a plan together. The therapy process in general is all about the connection. For me that starts with the fact that I see greatness in everyone. Regardless of our individual differences, we all have the potential to be the great happy people we are born to be. I will do my best to treat you with the utmost respect and kindness that you deserve, and in my heart, I wish the very best for you and everyone that I see.

Whether you contact me or someone else, I encourage you to get started today.

I am currently available for both in-person and virtual sessions.

About

Specialties

My Specialties

After completing my Master's Degree in Social Work, I set out to receive advanced training in Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Schema Therapy. I was fortunate to receive the guidance of Dr. Janet Klosko, a founding member of the Cognitive Therapy Association, former lead therapist at the CBT and Schema Therapy Institute of NYC, and a published expert in the field of CBT. In addition to obtaining a high level of skill with CBT and Schema Therapy, I went on to study Mindfulness-Based Therapies and have a high level of skill utilizing Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) in my practice.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is like counselling, however, the former tends to look more deeply, addressing the underlying causes of a person’s problems as well as how to solve them. While psychotherapy is not "rocket science", it is a science.

Evidenced-based research has been conducted in the field for many decades. As a result, there are "tried and true" methods for overcoming most mental health concerns. Besides knowing what these skills and methods are, a psychotherapist should have the ability to help an individual implement and assimilate these skills through the process of talk therapy. In that way, it is important to seriously consider a practitioner's experience in treating your specific concern. As well, it's paramount to feel comfortable and understood.

Therapy should be a place where you can fully be yourself. So, for the process of psychotherapy to be successful, you need both a knowledgeable psychotherapist and one that you can be yourself with.

CBT

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a well-researched and effective approach that focuses on the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is particularly effective for managing challenges like anxiety, depression, and stress, helping you break free from cycles that may be keeping you stuck and empowering you to take meaningful steps forward. There are very specific protocols I am able to utilize when working with you.

Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy builds on traditional CBT by diving deeper into long-standing patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that often stem from unmet emotional needs earlier in life. These patterns, or "schemas," can influence how you view yourself, others, and the world. We work together to uncover these patterns, understand their origins, and find healthier ways to meet your emotional needs. This approach is especially helpful for people dealing with long-term struggles in relationships, self-esteem, or emotional regulation. By addressing these core patterns, Schema Therapy helps you heal, grow, and develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself.

Mindfulness -
ACT & DBT

I have a high level of skill in Mindfulness-Based therapies including Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).

ACT can be applied to ADHD and most mood problems including Depression, OCD, and Anxiety.

Mindfulness training is a core component of ACT. I have been practicing Mindfulness Meditation and breathing for relaxation for much of my adult life. I apply these techniques to ACT.

I am also certified as a skills-based trainer in DBT.

Services

People come to therapy for a wide range of concerns.

On the one end of the spectrum, there are individuals who want to come in once and talk through a specific concern (consultation).

On the other end, we have physician referrals for individuals with complex mental health concerns that require specific evidence-based protocols to resolve the problem.

Most people are somewhere in the middle. Whatever your circumstance, I am capable of assisting you with even the most long-standing and difficult problems.

We will talk together and work out a plan to get you back on track, to help you feel better or to meet whatever goal you think is best.

And, if you are "somewhere in the middle", you can expect 4-8 sessions to get back on track.

If you want ongoing support or want to come and go, that can work as well.

The important thing is to get some help. â€‹

This is strictly a one hour initial consultation, providing you with the opportunity to ask questions or discuss concerns. Parents can use this process to evaluate their concerns and approach to helping their child or youth.

Assessment

A 90 minute process where various Outcome Measures and assessment forms are used to accurately define the concerns and next steps.

Individual Therapy

Following an assessment a defined number of one hour sessions are agreed upon and scheduled.

For those who prefer a more self-directed therapy process, the two texts I use for this protocol are Reinventing Your Life and Schema Therapy, both co-authored by Janet Klosko, and an additional resource that serves as a workbook, Mind Over Mood.
